The April issue of U.S. News & World Report will carry a story about the best states for teen drivers as part of a campaign to raise awareness for teen driver safety. The ratings are based on state driving laws and road conditions to determine how much a state is doing to promote safe roads, as well as government statistics on teen driving.
The best states for teen drivers are lead by these top ten (I feel like Letterman):
District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Maryland, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Minnesota, Utah, and Washington.
Car crashes kill more teens each year than anything else.
As far as I am concerned, any effort to change that is good. Sadly though, in spite of 61% of teens reporting that they worry about getting in an accident, teens continue to practice some very unsafe behaviors, as reported in this article:
- 82% of driving teens report using cell phones while driving;
- 49% admit to being distracted by texting and instant messaging while driving; and only
- 65% of teens think they are good drivers who pay attention.
Teens (81%) also reported that their parents have the biggest influence on their driving - so as parents, we need to step up our role modeling and training! No cell phones in the car!
